School zone speed limit times in the Central Okanagan may be changing.
Currently, school zone speed limits are 30 kilometres an hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but The Central Okanagan School District No.23 doesn’t think that’s good enough.
The district is asking Kelowna city council to change the current time frame from 8 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
The zone is being asked to change because although schools don’t start before 8 a.m., many school programming does.
“Local schools are offering more services to the community and extending their hours of operation. With this increase in services, and with many school programs being offered prior to the start of regular school day, children are walking to school earlier,” a letter addressed to Mayor Colin Basran by the district stated.
“The Board of Education feels it is important that school speed zone times come into effect earlier in the day so that drivers are aware and slowing down while student are on their way to school.”
The request will go before Basran and city councillors on Monday afternoon.
If approved, staff would have to change school zone signage to reflect the change in times. The new signs would be implemented by Aug. 31, before the start of the school year.
