Enjoy a sweet treat with a sweet pay off

JOEY Kelowna is launching a new program to give back to the community by serving up ice cream and donating part of the proceeds to a local charity.

The program, aptly named Scoop of Care, will kick off on Aug. 1 at their locations across the country.

For the entire month, $1 from each scoop of their Spun Daily Ice Cream will be donated to a local charity or cause chosen by JOEY employees.

In that time, they’re aiming to raise $20,000 for Canadian charities.

“Scoop of Care was created from our employees’ feedback and desire to find more ways to give back to their respective communities,” said JOEY Restaurants owner Jeff Fuller. “We surveyed partners in each city to determine what causes were most important to them. It was important to us that our employees had a voice in crafting Scoop of Care and determining what initiatives they wanted to support.

“We are all really excited to see where we can take this.”

In Kelowna, JOEY is partnering with the Kelowna Women’s Shelter, which provides emergency and transitional housing, food, clothing, counselling and prevention education to women and children experiencing domestic violence.

Just last year, more than 200 women and children spent at least one night at the Shelter.

“We are so grateful to have been selected as the charity of choice for the local Scoop of Care initiative,” executive director Karen Mason said. “To think that just by choosing to enjoy a delicious frozen dessert at JOEY people can help make a real difference in the lives of women and children in need in the community is pretty exciting!”

Executive Chef Chris Mills said they make the ice cream in-house, starting with liquid nitrogen, which freezes the ice cream base instantly to make tiny ice crystals.

Flavours options include Tahitian vanilla, double chocolate, maple, strawberry jam, salted caramel, sour cherry and chocolate and espresso. One serving runs for $6.
