Vernon residents head home after fire scare

UPDATE (11 a.m.): All roads are open and evacuees from Adventure Bay can return home.

The fires are not extinguished but they are contained and crews from Vernon Fire Rescue Services and The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations are still mopping up.

Helicopters are being used for water drops where firefighters can’t access the blaze.

A fire watch will be in place for 24 hours.

Original Story:

An evacuation order put in place Saturday night has been rescinded Sunday morning.

At about 9 p.m. Sunday, at least 60 residents from Vernon were told to evacuate after a fire, covering about an acre, sparked near Adventure Day.

By 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, the order was rescinded by Vernon Fire Chief Keith Green.

“We have the fire contained but are still mopping up,” Green said in a statement. “Roads are all open and displaced residents being advised they can return home.”

According to Green, their crew is currently working with the Ministry of Forests, and hope to get a few buckets dropped on the area to further help with the mop up stage.

Putting out the fire proved difficult due to the area, which is not easy for firefighters to access.

KelownaNow will update the story as more information becomes available.
