Today is Tragically Hip day in Kelowna…. and probably everywhere else in Canada.
Mayor Colin Basran proclaimed Aug. 20, 2016 as “Tragically Hip Day” in Kelowna. Basran made the news official in an Instagram picture in July and today he posted another.
The Saturday picture shows the Canadian band performing. Basran captioned it “Today, likely for the last time, I watch my favourite band perform. Their music at work…”
Basran previously spoke to KelownaNow about the band and why he loves them so much.
“I just think that the Tragically Hip are Canadian music icons and I know there are a lot of Hip fans in Kelowna. These proclamations can be fun.”
On Saturday evening, the Tragically Hip will be performing for what could be the last time ever in Kington, Ont.
Gord Downie, the 52-year-old lead singer, announced at the end of May doctors had diagnosed him with terminal cancer in December.
“Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard,” they wrote in an official statement. “In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we've been standing by him.”
The next day, the band announced a tour, proving that sad news couldn’t hold them down. The Tragically Hip has been touring Canada and playing some of the most iconic songs since July.
CBC will be broadcasting the last concert live and several places in Kelowna will be clicking on the televisions when the concert starts at 5:30 p.m. in B.C. The concert will be broadcast nationally and streamed around the world. There will be no on-demand or online streaming playback, according to CBC.
