Kelowna City Council committed to a new plan on homelessness during their regular meeting on Monday afternoon.
Over the next 16-18 months, the City will introduce a new Homeless-Serving Systems Strategy to help bring local social agencies together to tackle homelessness and help improve lives in the community.
They will focus on preventing homelessness, finding appropriate housing and improving the safety and health of residents.
According to the City, the homeless and at-risk population across the country is growing.
Because of this, a dedicated a staff position was created in mid-2015 in Kelowna to integrate and coordinate community agencies, along with the government and local business, to address the needs in the community.
“Local leadership, inclusive engagement, local knowledge garnered through in-depth consultation with stakeholders, community, and those with lived experience will all be critical to the development of an effective local systems strategy,” said Sue Wheeler, City of Kelowna Social Development Manager.
They will be working with people who have been homeless and can give information on the lifestyle and barriers to help prevent it.
