103 distracted driving tickets in six hours

In six hours, Kelowna Municipal and Central Okanagan Traffic Services handed out 103 cell phone violation tickets and 31 violation tickets for various offences including vehicle defects, no insurance and more.

"An individual’s perceived urgency to use a cell phone while driving will never be an excuse to put their lives, and the lives of others at risk" said Cst. Steve Holmes.

There were also 39 warnings given out for Motor Vehicle Act offences.

The ticketing was part of Operation Hang Up, an ICBC and Police program initiated on March 17th with the purpose of getting people to hang up their phones and drive.

"At crash scene after crash scene we (Police) have seen the tragic results of something that is completely preventable. Drivers have to leave their phones alone,” said Cst. Holmes.

Both police and ICBC were pleased with the results of the Distracted Driving Blitz. Volunteers were lined up along Enterprise Way reminding drivers to hang up their phones or leave them at home. Kelowna RCMP were at three locations ticketing drivers.
