The Aqua development is moving forward.
After a public debate was held at Kelowna City Hall on Tuesday, City Council voted on the matter.
They decided unanimously to support the Mission Group’s application to rezone the 6.15 acre site in the Mission Creek neighbourhood for the creation of Aqua Community.
The land, which is located on Capozzi Road near Hotel Eldorado, is now tourist commercial zoning, which allows the project to move ahead to the next step.
Now the focus for the Mission Group turns to securing a development permit, which will include a request for a variance to building heights.
“We are happy with tonight’s decision to move the plan forward,” said Luke Turri from the Mission Group. “It is the culmination of a substantial amount of planning and community work and the achievement of a plan which has been nearly 10 years in the making.”
The Mission Group has owned the property since 2008 and has actively consulted with the community on the plan over the last year.
In addition to the 350 unit high rise development, the plans also feature a new indoor private boat storage facility, a redesign of the public boat launch and an extension of the lakefront boardwalks and bike paths.
“With Aqua, we have made a strong commitment to planning quality public space and to design excellence,” said Turri. “Our goal is to create a welcoming urban waterfront neighbourhood that will be considered among the best places to live and recreate.”
More information on the Aqua development can be found on the Mission Group’s website.
