Waiting for a flight at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) will soon be a little easier for parents.
The airport is in the process of renovating its Kid’s Zone, making it an active play area for kids of all ages with a tree-fort inspired play structure, a slide and a cozy spot to read.
It’ll also feature a reading nook with books supplied by the Okanagan Regional Library, Adirondack-style chairs, an interactive digital display with artifacts from the region and a nature-inspired mural.
“We know it can be difficult for children to sit on a plane for long periods of time, and we want to give families a space that’s just for children to help channel some of that extra energy before travelling,” said Sam Samaddar, airport director.
“Through a partnership with the local indigenous community, the new play area will meet the needs of a variety of young travellers while also showcasing the beauty of the Okanagan.”
Renovations are expected to be complete by mid-November and a temporary play space has been set up in the meantime, located at the north end of the departures lounge.
The temporary spot has toys, games and colouring materials available for young travellers to use before boarding a flight.
The new Kid’s Zone is one of a few projects on the go at YLW to enhance the travel experience, the biggest of which for many will be the addition of 600 new parking spots.
