Bear Creek campground set to open later this month

Editor's note: This story was updated Mar. 13 with clarification on the opening date. It will open Mar. 27, not Mar. 22.

One of Kelowna’s provincial campgrounds that was threatened by a wildfire last summer is set to open to the public later this month.

Bear Creek Provincial Park is set to open on Mar. 27, a spokesperson for the operator told KelownaNow.

The day after the McDougall Creek wildfire swept across the Westside Road area, the smoke cleared enough to show that the beloved 143-site campground was spared.

However, the operator, Kaloya Contracting, confirmed that the trail system across Westside Road remains closed.

The announcement comes after the Regional District of Central Okanagan said two regional parks will likely remain closed until at least the fall.

Earlier this month, the RDCO said Raymer Bay, which is just south of Bear Creek Provincial Park, and Traders Cove are on track to reopen next month.

Unfortunately, Stephens Coyote Ridge and Rose Valley will remain closed pending assessments.

For anyone looking to reserve a camping spot at Bear Creek, reservations open Mar. 31 and sites can be reserved by visiting this link.
