Citizens group renews calls for bigger, revitalized community theatre in Kelowna

A community group is advocating for Kelowna City Council to create a task force to expedite the process of creating a new, revitalized community theatre.

Citizens for a New Performing Arts Centre (CN-PAC) has called upon city council in the past to establish a task force of councillors and expert community stakeholders to speed up the process.

“We applaud the council for its determination to listen to the community, as a means of identifying key areas of focus for its new mandate,” said CN-PAC co-president Myles Bruckal.

“We intend to be part of this process, and to underscore why the Okanagan urgently needs a better place to showcase the performing arts.”

The group sys the task force would be mandated by council to explore key issues like the location, construction parameters and financing of a new centre.

CN-PAC says the 850-seat Kelowna Community Theatre is now 60-years-old and a larger, more technologically advanced centre would bring more economic benefits, including “top-notch” entertainment, to the region.

The citizen’s group has commissioned research, which is available on their website, that shows a contemporary 1,600-seat venue in Kelowna’s cultural district could achieve these goals.

“We’ve done the legwork and we know it’s urgent that we take the next step,” Bruckal said.

“Establishing a task force would demonstrate the will necessary to advance this vital project.”

CN-PAC is a volunteer organization, established two years ago to mobilize community support for a new contemporary performing arts centre.
