Council okays $2.9M grant application for City Park upgrades

Multiple upgrades to Kelowna’s city park could soon be funded by a federal grant.

City staff has applied for a $2.9-million grant from the Community, Culture and Recreation program established by the federal and provincial governments.

If approved, the funding would go towards a new pier, gathering circle and destination playground in the downtown park.

According to city plans, the circular pier would connect with a gathering circle at the park’s northwest point to create an open air social space.

The destination playground is also said to feature "spaces and connections that speak to the uniqueness of the Okanagan Valley, based on the legend and principles of the four food chiefs of the Syilx Nation."

Shoreline improvements to stabilize cold sands and hot sands beach are also mentioned in the city's plans.
