After a local nurse at the Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) fell ill in December with an unknown illness, her daughter is now organizing funding for her recovery.
Seairra Dawne from Bertram Tattoo in Kelowna has started a GoFundMe for her mother so she can go to a specialist and get the care and the diagnosis she needs.
Dawne says she has seen every specialist in the Okanagan, had surgery, and received treatments, and has seen no change in her health.
If anything, Dawne says, she’s only gotten worse, weighing only 93 pounds.
Her mother works five days a week as a nurse at the KGH, but is not considered full time and therefore doesn't receive benefits.
Dawne says that her mother has spent her whole life taking care of others. She raised three children as a single mom.
“She had no support, no family,” says Dawne. “We never really had a lot… it was really rough for her, but she did it.”
Dawne says her mother also took in children from bad homes, and gave them a place to live and supported them.
“She’s spent her whole life looking after other people,” she says. “It’s time for someone else to step up and take care of her for once.”
Dawne is raising money to send her mother to a gastrointestinal specialist in Vancouver, who will hopefully be able to give them some answers and hope for treatment.
The cost to see a specialist and transportation to Vancouver is out of her mother’s budget, as her savings have “run completely dry.”
Dawne is organizing a silent auction with proceeds going towards helping her mother get a diagnosis. Dawne is also offering 50% off a piercing from her for anyone who donates at Bertram Tattoo.
So far, Dawne says she has reached $1,000 in donations, with a target goal of $5,000. Click here to support Dawne's mother on GoFundMe.
