Kelowna will host one of the over 35 public memorial ceremonies this month to commemorate workers who have suffered serious injury or death as a result of work-related tasks.
The National Day of Mourning occurs annually on April 28 in remembrance of lives lost and injuries suffered over the year.
In 2018, there were 131 work-related deaths in B.C., 66 of which were from occupational disease — mainly from historical asbestos exposure — and 65 resulting from traumatic injury.
The Okanagan-Similkameen region had four work-related death claims accepted in 2018.
Kelowna’s public memorial ceremony will be held in Kelowna on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Ben Lee Park at 900 Houghton Road.
A representative from the North Okanagan Labour Council, as well as Dave Dunham, an occupational safety officer from WorkSafeBC, will present at the ceremony.
