FortisBC begins work on $18.6M investment to upgrade Kelowna substation

Work is underway on a multi-year project to upgrade the Saucier Substation in Kelowna.

FortisBC says it’s investing $18.6 million in the substation that serves a large number of electricity customers in south-central and downtown Kelowna, which includes Kelowna General Hospital.

According to the utility provider, the work will increase the amount of power it can offer customers in the area, especially when demand is highest during the coldest and hottest times of the year.

The project will add a second transformer to the Saucier Substation, which is one of multiple substations in Kelowna.

FortisBC will also be expanding the substation’s control building, installing a new access gate and entrance on Richter Street and replacing the switchgear and breakers.

“The City of Kelowna greatly appreciates FortisBC's significant investment in the Saucier Substation and looks forward to continued collaboration,” said Ryan Smith, divisional director of planning and development services.

“The City is committed to working with FortisBC on proactive initiatives aimed at accelerating infrastructure investments in Kelowna's most rapidly growing areas.”

Work on the substation, located at 822 Saucier Ave., is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

According to FortisBC, demand for power in the Kelowna area has steadily increased due to population growth as well as the increased use of electric vehicles and heat pumps.

Over the past five years, the utility provider has added more than 10,000 new electricity customers in Kelowna.
