(UPDATE: 8:15 a.m.) - The heavy police presence at the Mission Park Inn this morning was in response to an early morning shooting.
At 5:23 a.m. today, Kelowna RCMP received a 911 call regarding a woman in medical distress inside a room of the motel, which now only offers long-term rentals.
Upon arrival, police found the woman suffering from a gun shot wound and she was transferred to hospital by BC Ambulance Service.
“This investigation is in it’s early stages,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Although no arrests have been made, police do not believe there is any risk to public safety."
"Police officers will continue to secure the scene, gathering physical evidence as part of their ongoing investigation.”
The Kelowna RCMP General Investigation Section has been called in to assist and has now taken control of the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact them by calling 250-762-3300 or report tips through Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800-222-8477.
(UPDATE: 7:30 a.m.) - An RCMP officer on scene has confirmed to KelownaNow that the police were called to the Mission Park Inn at 5:30 a.m.
However, the officer said they weren't ready to release any more information on the active investigation at this time.
A KelownaNow reader, Jason Steeves, who lives at the former hotel turned long-term rental space, said officers were knocking on the doors of all units throughout the early hours of the morning.
They were asking tenants if they heard or noticed anything out of the order, saying it was related to a "disturbance they were investigating."
The police presence outside the hotel has diminished over the last hour, suggesting that the initial investigation at the Mission Park Inn may be coming to a close.
We'll continue to update this story as more information is made available.
(Original story: 6:45 a.m.) - A KelownaNow reader has sent in photos of a heavy police presence outside the Mission Park Inn.
The reader reports six police cars parked directly outside the building, with a number of unmarked police vehicles in the parking lot across the street.
Officers are walking around on foot, but at this time KelownaNow can't confirm they are responding to a situation at the motel.
Calls to both the motel and the RCMP went unanswered this morning.
A KelownaNow reporter is en route to the scene and this story will be updated as more information is made available.
