The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has started a probe into a single-vehicle crash involving a Harley Davidson near the UBC Okanagan campus.
The crash happened around 5:20 pm on Monday and has already garnered a public appeal from the Kelowna RCMP for witnesses.
Now, police have provided a few more details on the incident, the major one being that the motorcycle was allegedly fleeing from an officer at the time.
According to the newest RCMP release, the rider passed an unmarked police vehicle while travelling southbound on Hwy 97.
“The officer activated their emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop due to their driving behavior, but the motorcycle reportedly did not stop,” the RCMP explained.
“Shortly after, the motorcycle reportedly lost control and crashed on the off-ramp from Hwy 97 to University Way.”
The RCMP initially did not provide information on the man’s condition post-crash, but have now said he was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Since the matter is now under investigation by the IIO, no further information will be released by police.
The Kelowna RCMP will continue to conduct its own concurrent investigation into the man’s driving behaviour.
