Iconic Kelowna fish and chips shop on the market for $490K

Shady Rest Fish & Chips has been a staple in central Kelowna for longer than most residents have been alive.

The iconic fish and chips shop will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2026, but those celebrations may happen under new ownership.

The land, building and business at 1359 Sutherland Ave. is listed for sale at $490,000.

Darran and Keri Cawood purchased the business in 2017 and became just its sixth owners since it opened in 1946.

They had planned to pass the business down to their son Alex, but he tragically passed away on June 2, 2024, at the young age of 28.

While selling the business was not their plan before Alex’s untimely passing, Darran and Keri made the decision to move on after much consideration.

According to this week’s Straight From DeHart column, set to be published on Wednesday, the decision was not made lightly and they hope to find new owners who will appreciate the history and reputation that Shady Rest has established over eight decades.

The listing for the business says they are offering to stay on and train the new owners in “all aspects of the operation,” if that is desired of them.

“This is an excellent opportunity for an entrepreneurial minded individual to take the reins of a successful local business,” the listing adds.

The sale of Shady Rest, located on a 0.5-acre lot at the corner of Sutherland Avenue and Lindahl Street, includes all the equipment needed to continue the operation of the fish and chips shop.

Prior to the Cawoods purchasing the business in 2017, Shady Rest was owned by the Pearson family for 50 years and initially listed for sale in 2015 for $289,000.
