Kelowna business lights on fire after improper disposal of oily rags

Kelowna Fire Department's quick response led to the saving of a local business on Friday.

According to platoon captain Kelly Stephens, at 9:34 pm, firefighters received a call about smoke coming from inside a building in the 200 block of Arab Court. Upon arrival, crews confirmed smoke inside a two-story business with a single suite below.

After deploying an offensive attack, KFD was able to control the blaze from the inside.

The building sustained only minor smoke and fire damage in the upper level. Following a quick inspection, the tenant in the lower suite was allowed to return as it had not been damaged.

A total of four engines, a command unit, one rescue and 18 personnel were on scene to fight the fire. They were assisted by RCMP and Emergency Health Services.

KFD confirmed the cause of the fire was oily rags left in an open container.
