Cst. Brad Smith works tirelessly to keep the streets of Kelowna safe.
The Kelowna RCMP detachment says Smith has spent his entire 13-year career in traffic services and has committed himself to becoming an expert in the field.
“He has made it his mission to improve his team, the detachment and the streets of Kelowna,” says local RCMP spokesperson Ryan Watters.
Each year, the BC Association of Chiefs of Police award five separate Traffic Safety Awards throughout the province and Smith is often a recipient.
And once again, he’s been named an Alexa’s Team All-Star for 2021, the sixth time he’s received the honour in his career, and is on track to be nominated as Alexa’s Team Top Cop as well.
Watters told KelownaNow that is takes a year to collect all the data and make the announcement official, hence why the honour is for 2021 and
“The Alexa’s Team is named in honour of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer who was killed by an impaired driver in Delta in 2008,” noted Watters.
“Alexa’s Team pays tribute to the dedicated RCMP and municipal police officers who make an extraordinary contribution to reducing the number of drivers affected by alcohol or drugs on British Columbia’s roads and highways.”
Smith’s statistics are rather impressive and label him as a top performer in BC.
In 2021, he successfully removed 78 impaired drivers from the streets of Kelowna, which is well above the provincial average.
He’s one of just three drug recognition experts posted in Kelowna who combined to perform a total of 52 evaluations in 2021. Smith performed 40 of them, or 77%. The provincial average is seven.
“Cst. Smith is a self-motivated member who takes his role as a traffic member seriously,” said Sgt. Mark Booth of the Kelowna Municipal Traffic Services.
“He has embraced his role as a traffic member and without question he exemplifies the core values of leadership, innovative thinking and a dedication to the organization and the community that he serves.”
