If the phone number 289-966-1628 calls, don't answer and don't call back.
KelownaNow has received multiple reports of a phone scam that appears to be spreading across Canada.
"I came home to a voicemail from the number 1-289-966-1628," said Susan Campbell, who is a retired banker living in Kelowna.
"The message was from a man who said he was officer Ryan Smith from Revenue Agency Canada and it was to do with his audit of my income tax."
According to Campbell, the messaged continued warning if the man didn't receive a call back he would consider it to be a denied call.
A quick google search of the number shows that many people from across Canada have received the exact same phone call.
"Got a message from this number saying it was the CRA and that I had committed fraud by not reporting income for 2016. Definitely NOT CRA," read a post online from a woman in Langley, B.C.
"Got a call saying it was CRA Officer Ryan Smith. I have committed Fraud activity and failure to return call will be treated as an offense," read another online post from a woman in Cranbrook, B.C.
Campbell says the man is aggressive and demanding and is worried the scam number could be targeting elderly people in Kelowna.
