Arriving in Kelowna only a week ago, and with 10 years of experience in the art industry, Christine May says she is looking forward to contributing her curatorial expertise at the Kelowna Art Gallery.
“I had the opportunity to come to Kelowna from the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. I know there's a very vibrant hub of artistic activity here so I think that will serve me well in my new position,” says May.
She says her primary interest is community building, explaining: “My curatorial philosophy is really building and maintaining relationships with working artists and other cultural professionals and scholars.”
A current favourite piece of hers at the gallery is from artist Aganetha Dick. She says: “Her artwork is in collaboration with honeybees so she’s been fascinating to me. Based out of Winnipeg, but is a real Canadian gem."
Regarding new exhibitions, she mentions that the current grizzly bear exhibit is being put on display for the first time.
May also says an upcoming project may interest art enthusiasts.
She explained: “Something I’m excited to work on that’s coming up is an exhibition called "Historian: Three Parts," which will be featuring Inuit artists and some contemporary Inuit film work as well.”
