Memorial ride planned for Kelowna teen who died in crash near YLW

The community continues to grieve the untimely loss of 18-year-old Tavin Hansom.

Hansom was killed on Thursday, June 23, while riding his motorcycle home on Hwy 97 near Kelowna International Airport.

He was heading northbound when he collided with a pickup truck that was turning onto the highway from the north end of Old Vernon Road.

A celebration of life for Hansom will be held at Winfield Memorial Hall at 1 pm on Sunday, which is being preceded by a memorial ride, which is being organized by Jake Burroughs.

“I have been asked to organize a memorial ride for Tavin Hansom, the young rider who tragically lost his life doing what he lived,” Burroughs explained.

The ride will be from McCurdy Corner to Winfield Memorial Hall and all motorcyclists are welcome to join in.

“We will meet at McCurdy Corner at 11:45 am,” noted Burroughs. “Kickstands up at 12:15 pm.”

In the near-two-weeks since the fatal incident, tributes have poured in for the teenager who lost his life far too soon.

“There was such a bright aura that always surrounded you, and you brought out the best in others,” Kenzie Karwandy wrote on Facebook.

Hansom’s good friend Tyler Mitchell wrote: “I’ll miss you so much, the world will not be the same without you man.”
