Months-long closure of Sutherland Avenue will begin Wednesday

Crews are set to begin work on the latest phase of the Sutherland Active Transportation Corridor (ATC).

Over the next few months, construction will be taking place on Sutherland between Gordon Drive and Ethel Street.

As a result, the City says that stretch of Sutherland will be closed starting Wednesday through until “summer 2024,” although no specific reopening date was given.

The construction is part of the larger project to extend the Sutherland ATC from Ethel to Burtch Road.

“In addition to 1.2 kilometres of new bi-directional cycle track, the project will add LED streetlights, intersection improvements, new crosswalks throughout the corridor and utility upgrades,” explained a City statement.

Crews worked on the stretch of ATC between Burtch and Chandler Street in 2023, and will now shift their focus west to the section between Ethel and Gordon.

“The construction schedule has been timed to coordinate with a neighbouring utility project in order to minimise disruption to residents,” the City noted.

The final two sections of the Sutherland ATC, from Gordon to Capri Street and Capri to Chandler, will be done in the summer.

Construction hours for this project are 7 am until 5 pm on weekdays, but the City says work may occur outside those hours to minimise impacts on residents and limit the time there’s active construction in the area.

The street will remain accessible to residents of the area and emergency vehicles at all times.

The $3.5-million ATC project is funded in part by the Canada Community Building Fund and, once complete, will fill the final gap in the east-west bike network.
