RDCO offers tips for keeping trick-or-treating dog-friendly

Halloween can be a difficult time for dogs.

Fireworks can be scary enough for our furry friends, but trick-or-treating can also be a difficult time for a lot of dogs.

Constant knocks or doorbell rings and new people coming to the door seemingly every couple of minutes can make it a very stressful time for pets.

That’s why the Regional District of Central Okanagan is offering up a few tips on how to make Halloween night go over as smooth as possible.

“While trick and treating is underway in neighbourhoods Central Okanagan Dog Control Services recommends that dog owners keep their pets indoors,” explained an RDCO release.

“It’s not unusual at this time of year for it to receive a few reports of dogs being frightened and running out into streets, where they could be accidentally injured by passing motorists.”

The RDCO urged all dog owners to ensure their license tag is attached to their pet’s collar or harness in case the worst happens and a dog does break bree while doors are open to hand out candy.

“Having a valid license tag on your dog is required by the Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw as it will help reunite you and your pet should it unexpectedly get away,” the release added.

“Of course, another benefit of a current dog license is that should it get away, there’s a one-time free ticket home!”

The RDCO also urges pet owners to keep candy, chocolate and wrappers out of the range of pets, as they can cause serious harm.
