The World Vision Canada 6K for Water returned to Downtown Kelowna's streets

The World Vision Canada 6K for Water race hit the streets of Downtown Kelowna today.

The event began with opening remarks from World Vision Canada representatives and a warm-up from visiting Harlem Globetrotters.

Participants from all over the Okanagan came together to run for the global water crisis, wearing photos of children that are directly affected by the cause and are currently available for sponsorship.

"Part of this is an opportunity to get outside on a beautiful day, but most of it was the fact that I really love what World Vision does," said Lauren May, a participant who has sponsored a child through World Vision Canada since 2012.

"The fact that you can go and support a child in another country or community, but also [have] the opportunity to meet them and hear little bits about there life - I really like getting my letter."

This event is designed to help participants understand the average distance people in the developing world, usually women or children, walk to get water for their families.

"I am so excited that the community could come together to be apart of this event, it gives everyone the opportunity to change and impact lives," said Kelli Marshall, Director of Events for World Vision Canada.

The initiative has raised $450 million globally and Kelowna's race had more than 300 participants running and walking for the cause.

Every person who registered for the race helped to bring sustainable clean water to children and families in Africa.
