People living in the Upper Mission should be aware of a trail closure near Frazer Lake.
The trail link across the Frazer Lake dam will be closed until at least the end of July as crews begin to rebuild the historic piece of infrastructure.
“The current dam was constructed in the early 1900s and does not meet the safety standards of today,” says Mike Kapiniak, project manager at the City of Kelowna.
“Crews will be onsite to remove the old dam and construct a new one out of steel sheet piles.”
Heavy equipment and personnel will be in the area as they lower the height of the dam while upgrading the existing nearby trail. Some tree removal will also be happening in the area.
According to the city, the dam used to provide water storage for the irrigation needs in the Mission area. The dam will not be completely deconstructed because the pond has become a valuable habitat for at-risk species such as the spadefoot toad and the painted turtle.
The city explains that an environmental management plan is in place to protect critical habitats and reduce negative impacts to the lake and surrounding areas.
