Ask any health care worker or frequent visitor to Kelowna General hospital about parking and prepare for an exaggerated eye roll.
The lack of on site parking at KGH has become a long standing issue, one exaggerated by the loss of 62 parking stalls during the development of JoeAnna’s House.
On Monday, city planners addressed the issue at council, reporting that Interior Health has identified the need for up to 400 more parking stalls at KGH.
Plans for a second parkade are now being considered to deal with the lack of parking, but planners have yet to decide where that parkade would be constructed.
A report presented to council made clear staff’s preferred location would be on the west side of Speer Street, which is within the hospitals “campus” area.
Despite it being well short of the recommended 300-400 stalls, a new 90-stall parking lot is set to be built at the corner of Royal Avenue and Abbott Street.
Interior Health would be on the hook for funding a new parkade with the City of Kelowna providing no additional budget.
