The Canadian Forces Snowbirds have officially landed in Kelowna, this afternoon.
They’ll be taking to the sky this weekend to put on a fabulous performance over Okanagan Lake to help the Kelowna International Airport celebrate its 75th anniversary.
If you were in the downtown core Friday afternoon, you may have heard the booming of seven CT-114 Tutors making a practice run over the city, but that’s nothing compared to what it will sound like on Saturday and Sunday.
“They’ll be doing their low-level show above the lake between the bridge and (the Delta hotel),” said Geoff Ritchie, YLW Senior Manager for Airport Development.
“That in itself will be fantastic for people who live here, people who come in from the rest of the region and tourists who come from further afield.”
The military aerobatics flight team last performed in the Central Okanagan back in July of 2014, so after eight years this performance isn’t one to miss.
Pilots will be pulling bold maneuvers in the air during their two 45-minute shows, but as Captain Dominic Appolloni explained the entire operation is a team effort.
“It’s nothing but teamwork for the snowbirds, from the techs on the ground to the briefings, and then the flying airborne, it's teamwork to the core,” Appolloni told KelownaNow.
Following Saturday's CF demonstration, YLW will be hosting a Wings n' Wheels event, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet the CF Snowbirds at the new KF Centre for Excellence, from 4 - 6 pm.
Wings n’ Wheels will also have food trucks, face painting, music and a vintage car show.
Both Saturday and Sunday’s show starts at 1 pm, and the City of Kelowna noted the best place to view the display would be along the waterfront from City Park to Waterfront Park.
If you miss this weekend’s crazy stunts, you'll have another opportunity to catch the Snowbirds in Penticton on Aug. 3 at the annual Peachfest celebration.
