Rutland Senior Secondary is scrapping the Voodoos team name and mascot.
The associated logos are also getting the cut.
RSS Principal Hugh Alexander said the change was entirely student-driven.
He said it was the students who brought forward how the term can be seen as culturally insensitive.
Even he didn't understand it at first,
"I was like 'What's wrong with Voodoo?'," said Alexander.
He added the issue has been coming before him for years.
"The students were educating the staff around it," said Alexander, "around the origin of it."
With issues like COVID now in the past, he felt the time had come to act.
"Last year people were talking about it and again this year," he said.
"I'm like OK, we need to do something about it."
It will not be the first time the school has changed its nickname.
"Voodoos has been around since 1971, but it was Royals and the Black Knights before that, so there's a history of changing things up.
But there is no word on what the next new team name should be.
"We're actually going to be talking with our PAC about it next week," said Alexander.
"We're going to be engaging in a process of seeking feedback from alumni, from current students and staff and community members around what they identify with."
The Voodoo name for Rutland Senior was taken from the Canadian military aircraft that commonly stopped in Kelowna to refuel on their way to and from Cold Lake, Alberta.
For now, watch as images of the old Voodoo logo continue to disappear, to be replaced with a big R for Rutland.
