VIDEO: Tracy Gray plans to door knock her way to re-election for the Conservatives in Kelowna

It's something that every serious candidate in an election has to do.

Meet voters at their doorstep.

The incumbent in the race in the newly drawn riding of Kelowna believes she has an advantage in this respect.

That's because Tracy Gray says she always knocks on doors.

"I don't just door knock during elections," she said, "I door knock year-round."

Gray is an entrepreneur, a former Kelowna city councillor who is seeking her third term in office.

Being an incumbent can be an advantage, and she may also get a boost by feeling very comfortable meeting voters where they live.

Because it's something she does a lot more than most MPs.

"I might be home on a weekend or maybe constituency week, it might be between meetings I'll just go door knock a street."

She said that's where a lot of good conversations happen.

"It's amazing how honest people will be with you when you're at their doorstep in their pyjamas."

Gray's campaign people told KelownaNow they expect their candidate to knock on just about every door before the campaign is over.

While Gray may meet many of her constituents in this way, she hasn't done many media interviews in recent years.

She seemed to suggest there could be more interviews like the one accompanying this story in the future if she is re-elected.

"Whenever it works," she said. "Here I am."

Gray said concerns that voters usually raise are on the subjects of affordability, crime and addiction and mental health.

"And now concerns about the unjustified trade and dispute that's happening with the United States."

And said she lets the voters choose where those conversations go.

"I was at a small business owner's business the other day and her had concerns over the tariff issues because he wasn't sure if his costs would increase," she said.

"But on the other side, he just had to spend $30,000 on extra security equipment because of all of the crime that he's had."

Gray said the economy has suffered under the Liberal government over the last decade.

"We've lost hundreds of thousands of really good paying jobs," she said. "We haven't been developing our resources."

Gray says it's the Conservatives who can best turn that around.

The riding of Kelowna has gone from a safe Conservative stronghold to a toss-up over the past few months, according to pollsters, but Gray tries to ignore all that.

"The only poll that matters is the poll on election day," she said.

Voting day is April 28.
