Silver medalists the past two years, the Kelowna Owls will be aiming for an upgrade at the B.C. School Sports senior AAA field hockey championship tournament beginning on Wednesday in Surrey.

The Owls, runaway winners of the Okanagan Valley title for a 17th straight season, are seeded third going into the 16-team provincial event being played at Tamanawis Park and Cloverdale Park.
Up first for the Black and Gold is a preliminary pool match against Panorama Ridge of Surrey at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The Owls will also play McMath of Richmond at 12:30 p.m. on opening day while they’ll close out four-team pool play with a match against Heritage Woods of Port Moody on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The quarter-finals are set for Thursday afternoon while the semifinals and championship game are set for Friday.
Looking to claim their first provincial title since 2009, the Owls earned the berth at the BCSS tournament with three lopsided victories at the recent Okanagan Valley championship in which they shut out the Okanagan Mission Huskies (6-0), Mt. Boucherie Bears (7-0) and Penticton Lakers (9-0).
Superior fitness and technical skills allowed the Owls to roll out all 17 players into each game. Not only did they score the 22 goals, but they didn’t allow a single shot on net in the three games.
The Owls didn’t participate in the Okanagan’s senior AAA regular season, deciding rather to compete in four major tournaments this fall, including the HK Golden Pumpkin in Vancouver in which they finished first. They also took second place at the UBC tournament in Vancouver and placed fifth at the prestigious Bridgman Cup tournament in Victoria.
