Kelowna Water Polo Club members shine in national competition

Members of the Kelowna Water Club had a tournament to remember last weekend when they joined forces with the Pacific Storm Water Polo Club.

Kelowna’s Mason Baughen, Clarke Schafer and Octavio Macedo Vasconcelos Guimarães were in Edmonton for the 17U National Championship League (NCL) tournament, playing four games and finding victory each time.

The players were under the guidance of Pacific Storm head coach Nikola Maric, who brought his players from multiple teams together for the event.

“Pacific Storm is first overall in Canada at this moment,” explained Maric.

“The team played well, but we have a lot of room for improvement. I am most happy with their effort and willingness to execute the plan we made before each game.”

After competing in three of five western conference tournaments, the Storm are well situated for 17U nationals taking place at the end of May.

"Last weekend's 17U NCL tournament in Edmonton was an exciting and successful experience for the Kelowna boys,” said Guimarães.

Last weekend's game results:

Friday:

  • Pacific Storm (15) vs Team Sask (seven)
  • Pacific Storm (13) vs Torpedoes (six)

Saturday

  • Pacific Storm (14) vs Vortex (eight)

Sunday

  • Pacific Storm (14) vs Surrey (nine)

The Kelowna Water Polo Club has several events on their schedule including a winter development tournament in Kelowna and a 17U NCL tournament in Richmond.

A number of players from the club will also be heading south on spring break for a five-day training camp in California.

The four players from Kelowna will train with the Pacific Storm and scrimmage against local clubs in America.
