Last weekend, the BC Ball Hockey Championships took place in Surrey.
Kelowna had two teams feature: Divorced Men in the ‘C’ division and Notorious Victorious in the ‘D’ division.
The Divorced Men started their tournament on Friday with a 8-5 victory over the AC Hawks from Vancouver, while Notorious Victorious fell 6-4 to Wiserhood.
On day two of the championships on Saturday, Divorced Men drew with Avalanche 3-3 before just beating Victoria Salsa 8-7 to punch their ticket to the semifinals on Sunday.
Notorious Victorious beat the Nanaimo Street Kings 6-5 to set up a must win match against the Surrey Serpents to advance to the playoffs. Unfortunately, they fell 4-3 and were knocked out of the tournament.
In the semifinal on Sunday, the Divorced Men were able to defeat the Kamloops Junkyard Dogs 5-3 to advance to the finals against the Victoria Dragons.
The final was a defensive battle, however, Divorced Men were able to score twice, and that was enough as they claimed the provincial championship with a 2-0 win.
Punctuated by his shutout in the finals, goaltender Chris Harris brought home the MVP award, while teammate James Rayburn received the top scorer award for his 16 points in five games.
It was the first time in nine years that Kelowna had the sanctioned Ball Hockey Association league back in the city. It was also the first time it sent teams to provincials.
The resurrection of the league this season led to four teams competing within the city. League Coordinator (and the MVP goaltender) Chris Harris was instrumental in getting the league back on its feet.
