National champion coach back in Kelowna, this time with another Okanagan squad

A hockey coach with close ties to the Okanagan and a glowing resume is set to return to behind the bench of a local team.

Earlier this week, the Kelowna Chiefs of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) named Rylan Ferster as the team’s new head coach and general manager.

“We are extremely excited to have Rylan join the Kelowna Chiefs,” said owner Darren Tymchyshyn.

“Rylan’s wealth of experience and ability to lead teams to success make him the perfect fit for our organization. We believe his leadership and dedication will elevate the Chiefs' program and help us continue to build on our strong foundation. We look forward to exciting hockey ahead under his guidance.”

Ferster previously coached the West Kelowna Warriors, where he led the team to a BCHL league championship and a national championship in the 2015-16 season.

When he stepped down from the role as the Warriors' head coach and general manager before the 2018-19 season, he had amassed a 210-150-35 record.

The Saskatchewan product’s playing career was highlighted by a national championship win with the Vernon Lakers in the 1990 Centennial Cup.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Kelowna Chiefs. I would like to thank Mr. Tymchyshyn for the opportunity,” said Ferster.

“When I had the chance to move back to Kelowna and be close to my twin daughters, it really left very little in the way of decisions. I can’t wait to get started!”

Ferster takes over from Dave Whistle, who coached the Chiefs for the second half of this past season.

The Chiefs are set to hold their main training camp at the end of August and then the team’s home opener is slated for Sept. 19 against the Osoyoos Coyotes.
