The UBCO Heat cross country team kicked off their season with a bang this past weekend at the Interior Running Association's Fast Days of Summer 5000.
Kristen Smith won the women’s side of the event with a time of 17:14 and 13th overall in the five-kilometre race that goes along the Rail Trail in Kelowna.
Three other members of the women’s team completed the run with sub-19 minute times, including Brooke Lawlor, Lys Milne and Esther Stuart.
On the men’s side of the race, Russell Pearson finished second overall in the race with a time of 15:35.
Behind him and finishing third overall was Owen Lloyd, who finished four seconds behind his teammate, Russell Pearson.
Six members of the Heat posted sub-17-minute times, including Basil Parkins, Christopher Crowe, Isaac Baker, Joshua Milliken and Charlie Kanuka.
In total, 122 runners competed in the race in a variety of age categories.
Next up for the Heat cross country team is a trip to Vancouver this upcoming weekend to compete in the 2023 Vancouver Spirit Run at Jericho Beach Park.
