Some elite level golf will be coming to the Okanagan Golf Club in the fall.
UBC Okanagan has been awarded the 2019 Canada West Golf Championships, which is also the inaugural edition of the tournament.
Golf was added at the Canada West level following the league’s annual general meeting held in Kelowna last May.
The final dates for the championship have yet to be announced, but they’ll take place in the fall.
It’ll be played at the Okanagan Golf Club’s Bear Course, the home of the UBCO Heat golf team since its inception in 2008-09.
One of the keys to creating a winning bid for the tournament was UBCO’s partnership with Tourism Kelowna.
"Tourism Kelowna is very proud to have supported UBC Okanagan's successful bid for the inaugural Canada West Golf Championships,” said Harvey Hubball from Tourism Kelowna.
“As a premier golf destination in Canada, we're excited to welcome top student-athletes to the Okanagan Golf Club and continue to grow Kelowna's impressive hosting resume."
The Okanagan Golf Club has already hosted a number of big tournaments for the Heat, but the Canada West tournament later this year will take it to a new level.
The course’s GM, Dan Matheson, expressed his excitement to show off the Nicklaus-designed course to Canada’s top university golfers.
