UPDATE: Tom Petty has died at age 66

(UPDATE: 9:45 p.m.) - Tom Petty has officially been pronounced dead.

The 66-year-old's long-time manager Tony Dimitriades confirmed the sad news on a post through social media.

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend, Tom Petty," the post said. "He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of (Monday) morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived."

Dimitriades said the singer died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PST, surrounded by his family, friends and bandmates.

(UPDATE: 4 p.m.) - The Los Angeles Police Department says it has no information related to the passing of Tom Petty and initial information was "inadvertently" provided to media.

Contrary to earlier reports that said the singer had died, TMZ is reporting Petty is "clinging to life" after going into cardiac arrest Sunday night and is "not expected to live through the day."

(UPDATE: 1:15 p.m.) - The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed to CBS News that Tom Petty is dead.

(Original story: 12:40 p.m.) - TMZ is reporting that Tom Petty is brain dead and a decision has been made to pull the plug on his life support.

It was initially reported that he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on Sunday night after the 66-year-old was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Upon arrival at the house, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were able to get a pulse.

Petty was rushed to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support, but his current condition is unknown.

The musician, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, is best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

He’s also known as a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys.
