KelownaNow wants to get to know the hard working, up and coming artists who fill our city with music and we’re almost positive most of you do too!
Our Saturday Spotlight series that will feature a new, local act every other weekend, to better strengthen our scene and get to know the people behind the music.
After finding one another through classified ads, punk rock outfit Early Work, have been making quite the name for themselves in the Kelowna scene.
The up and coming band have secured a comfortable spot the blooming roster of desired punk acts after a short year and a half together — and can often be found ripping the Fernando’s Stage alongside other punk-influenced groups.
Founding member and guitarist, Kurtis Janot answered our questions.
How would you describe your music?
We call ourselves punk rock.
Who and what influences or inspires you?
We're inspired by punk, pop punk, post-hardcore. Acts like Matt Good, The Flatliners, Tragically Hip, PUP, Knuckle Puck, Billy Talent, Blink 182, Alexisonfire and Touche Amore.
Early Work’s writing process is one of collaboration according to Janot. “We like to simply bounce ideas off each other until something sticks. At which point we just run with it and name the song the nearest object that happens to be in that room, changing the title later of course,”
Tell us about your favourite performance to date?
When it comes to pre-show rituals, Janot has one that is pretty unique apart from the common same day rehearsals.
“My rituals include making a mental connection or talking with my guitar picks and finding out which one is ready for the task at hand.”
What achievement are you most proud of in your musical career?
Releasing our EP! That took us a very long time which included many technical difficulties. Its been well worth it however, we're proud of ourselves and have received some great feedback.
What is your favourite part about being involved in the Okanagan music scene?
The people of course. You hear stories about people within in music scenes having big ego's or trying to be exclusive. That certainly has not been our experience.
We've met so many great musicians, promoters, show-goers, event staff, audio professionals. We have way more friends and connections then we did when we started and that is probably the best part of it all.
Who do you nominate for Saturday Spotlight?
You can catch Early Work on Thursday, April 4, with Yard Sale, Stasis and Youth Fountain at Muninn’s Post.
Stay up to date with them through Facebook and find their latest releases on most streaming platforms and Bandcamp!
