Mounties say alcohol is to blame for a head-on crash that happened in the Lake Country area earlier this week.
The Lake Country RCMP was called to the scene of the crash on Glenmore Road at Shanks Road around 9 pm on Tuesday, June 16.
Responding officers determined that a southbound SUV failed to navigate a curve in the road and crossed into the oncoming lane, which led to a head-on collision with another car.
The drivers of both vehicles, which sustained enough damage to make them not drivable, remained at the scene.
According to police, the driver of the SUV told witnesses that they may be impaired, which was information that those witnesses passed along to officers.
The driver was asked to provide roadside breath samples and was confirmed to be impaired by alcohol, leading to a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impound.
S/Sgt. Jon Collins said it was “disappointing to see,” as it’s Lake Country's second head-on collision involving alcohol in the last three weeks.
“Our officers remove hundreds of impaired drivers from the road every year and will continue to actively target this dangerous and reckless behaviour,” Collins added.
“Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and death on our roads, and it is entirely preventable.”
While the SUV driver was transported to hospital for assessment, the driver of the other vehicle was fortunately not injured in the crash.
