Evacuation alert lifted for properties near the Hwy 97 rockslide north of Summerland

An evacuation alert for a handful of properties off Highway 97 near Summerland has been lifted after 16 months.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen lifted the evacuation alert for four properties along North Bench Road that was put in place following a rockslide in August 2023.

The properties are located between the 429 to 455 block of North Beach Road.

The rockslide fully closed Highway 97 for two weeks in late August and early September.

It operated with single-lane alternating traffic for another two weeks before finally opening to two lanes of traffic in late September.

The highway also faced several closures from September 2023 to July 2024 for blasting work.

Last month, BC’s Ministry of Transportation said long-term repair work would begin in 2025.
