Okanagan student off to France after winning prestigious scholarship

Studying abroad just got a little cheaper for two Okanagan Students after winning prestigious scholarships.

Madeline Kempf and Cassandra Lum were two of six students provincially to be awarded the Premier’s International Scholarships from the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society. The awards, valued at between $6,000 and $10,000 each, will assist Kempf and Lum study abroad at colleges or universities in 16 different countries.

“I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity,” said Lum, who will graduate next June with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

“I think it’s extremely beneficial to have a worldly view when it comes to business, but beyond that I firmly believe travel is just such an important part of how we learn and grow outside of the classroom.

The Penticton student has always dreamt of studying in France and now she has the opportunity to because of this scholarship.

In addition to winning this coveted award, Lum also received a national Founders Bursary. These bursaries were awarded to only 10 students in Canada.

Lum received that bursary for her work as the president of Enactus Okanagan College, which is a community of entrepreneurial students working to advance social issues through business.

“Studying abroad is a wonderful option the school provides,” said Lum. “I’d certainly encourage students to consider it when planning their studies.”

She will be heading to EDHEC Business School in Nice at the end of August.
