An inquest will be launched for an Ottawa man who died while in custody at the Pacific Institution in Abbotsford.
Roman William Rezanowicz was serving a life sentence for the first degree murder of his wife Kelli Rezanowicz. The 32-year-old was found strangled to death and then hung in the garage of her home to make the death appear as a suicide. He was subsequently found guilty of first-degree murder and has been serving his sentence since November 19th, 1997.
Rezanowicz was found unresponsive in his cell on April 30th, 2014. Staff members performed CPR on him but he could not be resuscitated. Evidence surrounding the 57-year-olds death will be presented to presiding coroner Isis van Loon and a jury will head testimony from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.
The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. The inquest will begin on December 7th, 2015 in Burnaby at the Coroners Court.
