Three people were injured in Richmond following a dog attack.
Richmond RCMP officers responded to a 911 call on Wednesday afternoon saying that a female was being viciously attacked by a dog.
The 21-year-old female was found on the ground, covered in blood trying to fend off the 80+ pound Rottweiler cross.
“The 21-year old female from Richmond suffered extensive injuries from the attack. She was rushed to local area hospital. We have learned that she suffered over 100 bites to her body, a fractured arm, a detached bicep. She is currently undergoing surgery and is listed in critical condition,” said Corporal Dennis Hwang.
Officers came up with a plan to get the female away from the dog. One of the officers attempted to distract the dog, which worked momentarily but returned to re-attack the victim and the officer.
Hwang said the officer was forced to fire at the dog, but it eventually fled and was located and captured uninjured.
The young woman was trying to keep the dog away from attacking her twin sister’s three-year-old son. The twin sister also sustained serious injuries while defending her son from the dog.
“Prior to our officers arriving, a Good Samaritan attempted to intervene, but was also attacked by the dog. He unselfishly put himself in harm’s way in order to protect a fellow human being. He was also treated in hospital suffering from lacerations to his hand. It was a miracle that our officers were unharmed,” said Hwang.
The dog is known to the twin victims and is owned by a boyfriend. The Rottweiler cross is now in the custody of the Richmond Animal Protection Society.
** An earlier version of the article stated that the breed of dog was a Rottweiler/Pit bull cross. At 2:53 p.m., Richmond RCMP now say the dog breed is a Rottweiler-cross.**
