VSA Releases Video Showing the Danger of Passing Plows

The group that works to keep the Coquihalla Highway clear during winter snowfalls has released an important video for drivers to watch.

VSA, the BC Highway Maintenance Contractor who is responsible for keeping the highways in the Nicola region clear of snow, has released a three minute video outlining the importance of driving safe during the winter months and how to properly share the road with snow plows.

During a heavy snowfall, VSA said they will have 14 to 15 pieces of equipment on the Coquihalla Highway.

Plow operators said having people try to pass plows creates a very dangerous situation for both the driver and the plow truck.

“Passing a plow truck on the right while he is actively plowing snow… you’re putting yourself, and your family, the occupants of your vehicle at risk, there is no question, “ said Highway Maintenance Manager, Blair Barr.

VSA said since the beginning of winter, in November 2015, there have been nine collisions with the public.

Equipment operators in the video share stories of some of the collisions they have had with vehicles trying to pass them, hoping their experiences will discourage drivers from making the same mistake in the future.

Drivers are being asked to be patient when behind a plow truck and respect those trucks are doing a job.

“We’re not here to get in your way,” VSA equipment operator, Michelle.

“We all want to make it home to our families at the end of the day too.”

VSA has been operational since 1988, and are presently maintaining service area 14, Nicola, which includes the Merritt area and Coquihalla Highway.
