Vancouver Island Police Call it the Worst Excuse for Drunk Driving

Nanaimo RCMP are calling it the worst excuse for drunk driving they have ever heard!

Just after 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 25th, Corporal Norm Smith of the Nanaimo RCMP detachment was following up on a complaint of a possible impaired driver. The officer stopped the suspect vehicle and had a conversation with the female driver.

Corporal Smith asked the woman if she had been drinking, to which she responded by saying she had not consumed alcohol for two months. Her next response was not expected- she told the officer it must be due to the sandwich she was eating!

“Without missing a beat, Corporal Smith asked her 'well how much did the sandwich have to drink?' Maybe recognizing how ridiculous her response was, the back and forth abruptly ended the conversation,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien.

The woman was asked to provide a breathe sample, to which she registered a ‘fail’ reading. Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days and she received a 90 day prohibition from driving.

“This example is not intended to make light of impaired driving, which kills or injures hundreds of people every year. It was though one of the more creative excuses ever provided,” O’Brien said.
