Dad and WestJet team up to save the honeymoon

It was a fairly normal Wednesday morning for Ken Ludwar, that is until he was thrown into the middle of a real life WestJet commercial.

Ludwar’s daughter Stacy Hallstrom and her new husband Devin left Ludwar’s house in Grand Forks early on Wednesday to catch their honeymoon flight to Mexico at Kelowna International Airport.

There was just one small problem, though, they had forgotten their passports.

“They used my scanner to copy their passport material, just in case things were lost or anything,” explained Ludwar over the phone on Wednesday. “But she got distracted and they forgot the passports under the scanner.”

With their passports over two hours away, it seemed like the newlyweds’ honeymoon might be over before it even started, but that’s when Ludwar and WestJet teamed up to save the day.

“I calculated if I could make it or not, got out of my housecoat, got dressed and got out of there,” Ludwar said.

The distress call from the Hallstroms came shortly before 8 and Ludwar made it to YLW just after 10, only 20 minutes before their plane was scheduled to take off.

“I went as quick as the roads would allow me to,” said Ludwar.

The Hallstroms had already gone through security and couldn’t leave the airport, so when Ludwar showed up there was a WestJet employee standing outside in the cold, waiting to grab the passports and save the day.

“You’ve got a young married couple about to go on their honeymoon and you know it’s not going to happen unless you kick it up a notch and make it work,” Ludwar explained. “WestJet did.”

While it’s a story that seems made up for a WestJet advertising campaign, it just goes to show that these kinds of incidents do still happen in real life and it’s always nice to see a happy ending.
