There were check stops all over British Columbia this past weekend as part of the Light Up The Province campaign.
Law enforcement agencies across the province participated in the campaign to target impaired drivers as we get into the holiday season.
There were 228 check stops that saw just under 55,000 vehicles screened, resulting in 222 drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs being taken off the road.
“It was encouraging to see that the overall percentage of impaired drivers was low throughout the evening,” said Chief Supt. Holly Turton from the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP).
“However, it is important to remember that just one person driving while impaired can result in devastating consequences for themselves and others. This is why the BCHP continues to prioritize impaired driving enforcement.”
Penalties for impaired driving in BC can range from a 24-hour to 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, along with impoundments, fines and potential criminal charges.
The BCHP will continue to work with RCMP and police agencies around the province this holiday season in an effort to keep impaired drivers off BC roads.
