House to be recalled for confidence vote on June 22

The B.C. Legislature will be reconvened for a throne speech on June 22nd where Christy Clark is expected to test the confidence of the house.

Government House leader Mikael de Jong made the announcement on Wednesday.

"Today, on behalf of Premier Christy Clark, I informed the Office of the Speaker that the legislature will be recalled on Thursday, June 22, 2017,” said de Jong.

"The first order of business in this new parliament will be the election of a speaker. After which, and in the aftermath of a very close election, the government will seek to determine if it continues to enjoy the confidence of the house."

When the house reconvenes, Premier Clark will give a Throne Speech which will be followed by a debate and a vote on an amendment of non-confidence.

Following the signing of a historic power-sharing agreement between the NDP and the Greens, it’s expected that Clark will lose the confidence vote.

If this occurs, it is likely that Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon will ask NDP leader John Horgan to become the next Premier rather than call another election.

Horgan and the Green Party leader Andrew Weaver have already presented a signed copy of their accord to Guichon in preparation for Clark failing to secure the confidence of the House.

The Throne Speech will follow one of the tightest elections in the history of B.C., where the governing Liberal party only managed to secure 43 seats - one seat short of a majority.
