Justin Trudeau visits popular Vancouver gay bar as city's Pride Week kicks off

Vancouver’s annual Pride Week began on Monday and it featured a special visitor at one of the city’s gay bars.

As patrons sipped on their beers and cocktails at the Fountainhead Pub on Davie Street, none other than Prime Minister Justin Trudeau walked through the front doors.

Trudeau was in town to mark the completion of renovations at the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station and address supporters at a Liberal fundraiser on the UBC campus.

In between the two engagements, however, he took time to visit the Fountainhead Pub to meet Vancouverites, shake hands and take a number of photos.

"Vancouver is gearing up for Pride weekend right now, but the spirit of pride and inclusivity is strong here all year long," Trudeau tweeted on Monday night. "Thanks to the folks at (the Fountainhead) for the warm welcome today."

Although unconfirmed, many reported and believe that it’s the first time a sitting Canadain prime minister has visited a gay bar.

Those lucky enough to be at the bar when the prime minister were clearly excited to see the leader of Canada.

“Kicking off Pride Week with my best friend, my MP and my prime minister,” tweeted Tommy D, whose photo also featured Vancouver Centre MP Hedy Fry.

Fry took to Twitter to call Trudeau “genuine” and said that even NDP and Conservative supporters were happy to see the prime minister and get a photo with him.

Both the pride flag and trans flag were raised outside Vancouver City Hall on Monday and the celebrations will continue all week long before the city’s annual Pride Parade on Sunday.
