Man caught in Yoho National Park avalanche dies in hospital

One of three people caught in an avalanche at Yoho National Park on Saturday died in hospital, says Parks Canada.

The agency says the male’s death was a result of an avalanche that occurred Saturday afternoon on Des Poilus Glacier, which is on the Wapta Icefield about 180-kilometres northwest of Calgary.

STARS Ambulance airlifted the man to a Calgary hospital, noting he was in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The other two members were not injured.

Avalanche conditions can range from high to low and are dependent on weather, location, and other factors; according to Parks Canada, the avalanche danger rating for Saturday was variable.
